In 2009 the German city of Dortmund was chosen as location for Germany’s first football museum (cf. EAP News from October 21, 2009). Following a construction period of about three years, the German Football Museum was officially opened by the museum’s director Manuel Neukirchner and General Manager Michael Keßeler at the end of this past October.

The museum building was constructed by HPP Architects and is situated in the center of Dortmund. The new attraction’s operator is the non-profit foundation DFB-Stiftung Deutsches Fußballmuseum, owned in equal parts by the city of Dortmund and DFB (German Football Association). Covering an exhibition space of around 7,000 square meters the museum as “central memorial site of German football” informs, amongst others, about historical football moments and the sport’s development. The exhibition’s concept was created by Berlin’s scenography agency TRIAD. “The German Football Museum is an attraction for our city and the whole region. Having brought this unique project to Dortmund will pay off. It is an open, communicative museum and at the same time an attractive world of experience that is worth visiting,” Dortmund’s mayor Ullrich Sierau says. (eap)
