Japan: Universal Studios Japan Announce “Donkey Kong” Expansion for Super Nintendo World
As was announced yesterday, the “Super Nintendo WorldTM”, which opened at Universal Studios Japan this spring (cf. EAP news of 18 Mar 2021 & EAP issue 2/2021), will be expanded by the addition of a new theme area bringing the iconic video game character “Donkey Kong” to life. While the Super Nintendo World, which was highly awaited by fans worldwide, has so far focused primarily on the games of the “Super Mario” series, visitors will also be able to fully immerse themselves in the adventures of the beloved giant ape starting in 2024. Released in 1981 as an arcade platform game, Donkey Kong has been made available for various Nintendo game consoles over the years – since then, the game series has sold over 65 million units worldwide (as of March 2021).
The expansion represents a significant increase in the size of the existing Super Nintendo World, which is expected to grow by 70 percent. Plans include a new rollercoaster, interactive experiences, as well as themed merchandise and food revolving around Donkey Kong and his friends. Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Super Mario and other Nintendo game series, will be part of the creative team that will bring the Donkey Kong area to life. (eap)
