USA/Germany: First Rollercoaster Announced for Cruise Ship
Miami/Florida-based Carnival Cruise Line and Maurer Rides have announced to build the first rollercoaster on a cruise ship: Debuting in 2020, the new Mardi GrasTM ocean liner will offer passengers an exciting ride experience on “BOLT”, a Spike® Racing Coaster model from the German manufacturer. The all-electric attraction will be erected on a site of 84 x 33 meters, featuring a track length of 220 meters. It will be equipped with two cars for two persons each, designed as motorbikes. After an initial launch directly from the start, riders will race each other at a maximum velocity of 60 km/h by individually controlling their car’s speed.
Christine Duffy, President of Carnival Cruise Line, is proud of the innovations: “Mardi Gras will be our most innovative ship ever with some truly special features and attractions, highlighted by BOLT, the first rollercoaster at sea. BOLT will continue the tradition of Carnival providing exciting new ways for our guests to ‘Choose Fun’ […],” said Duffy.
Mardi Grass will set off on its maiden voyage from its home port Port Canaveral (Florida) in 2020. An overview of further innovations and trends in leisure entertainment on cruise ships can be found in our special feature published in EAP 3/2018 and in the upcoming sequel in EAP 1/2019. (eap)
