20 Years of Paradise at Therme Bad Wörishofen
(eap) In May 2004, Therme Bad Wörishofen, located just 40 minutes southwest of Munich, opened its doors for the first time. Since then, thermal spa has welcomed almost 13 million guests, with 730,000 in 2023 alone. This year, the thermal spa, managed by Jörg Wund, is celebrating its 20th anniversary.
Covering a total area of over 17,000 square meters, the site offers a thermal bath area (7,000 m2), vitality bath & saunas (2,700 m2) and a sports pool (3,500 m2). The architectural landmark of the South Sea paradise is the huge, completely openable dome at a height of 18 meters. This transparent construction floods the pool with light and can be opened on warm summer days so that an area of over 2,500 square meters is directly hit by the sun’s rays. Peace and relaxation are guaranteed by the minimum age of 16 years – only on Saturdays do families also conquer the bathing paradise. Last year, the Panorama Lounge was opened in the thermal spa area, where 20 relaxation islands for up to two people each are available on over 110 square meters with an exclusive view over the South Sea landscape.
Solar energy has played a central role at the Bad Wörishofen thermal spa since its opening, as the glass building complex uses every ray of sunshine in the truest sense of the word. Since 2019, solar modules on the roof of the thermal spa changing rooms have been producing their own electricity. With the expansion of the system in 2022, the capacity has been significantly increased and supplies almost 30% of the energy required under optimal conditions. Further plans for an independent energy supply are to be realized in the coming months. For instance, the thermal spa parking lot will be covered with additional photovoltaic systems at a cost of around EUR 2.3 million, which, with a peak output of 1,540 kWp, will cover the entire electricity requirement and up to 75% of the heat requirement in good conditions. ■
