China: Shanghai Disney Resort Celebrates Grand Opening Starting Today

In Shanghai Disney Resort, the first Disney resort in Mainland China and the sixth Disney resort worldwide, a three-day opening celebration is starting today before opening the doors to visitors for the first time on Thursday (cf. EAP news from January 18th, 2016). The celebration begins today with the global premier of the first Mandarin production of “The Lion King” at the 1,200-seat Walt Disney Grand Theatre in Disneytown. It continues tomorrow with a grand opening gala concert at the Enchanted Storybook Castle led by composer Tan Dun, followed by the “Starlight Celebration Dessert Party” in Tomorrowland. On June 16th, there will be a festive dedication ceremony in front of the Enchanted Storybook Castle to officially open Shanghai Disney Resort, which features a theme park, two hotels, a shopping, dining and entertainment district and the recreational area Wishing Star Park. Shanghai Disney Resort is tailor-made for Chinese guests and a joint venture between The Walt Disney Company and Shanghai Shendi Group comprised of two owner companies. On an area of approx. 389 hectares it is Disney’s largest investment to date made outside the USA. (eap)
