Construction Start for DSRT Surf Resort in California
(eap) Construction recently began on a new surf resort called “DSRT Surf“ at Desert Willow Golf Resort in Palm Desert, California. The centrepiece of the resort, developed by Desert Wave Ventures and BeachStreet Development & Operations, will be a 5.5-acre (2.2 hectare) man-made surf facility using Wavegarden Cove technology. The lagoon will comprise a total of 52 wave-generating modules. At least 88 surfers will be able to catch their perfect waves at the same time. There will be 20 different types of waves to serve both, beginners and advanced surfers. In addition to the surf pool, the resort will include residential villas, a hotel and a wide range of resort amenities such as dining options, pickleball, a pool, a fitness center, a skate park and a surf academy. The surf resort is scheduled to open in spring/summer 2026.
The construction of the surf facility comes along with the implementation of the city’s so-called “Turf for Surf“ program, which builds on plans to remove turf areas to reduce the amount of water needed for irrigation at the Desert Willow golf park. Approx. one third of the future surf pool’s annual water consumption will be used to irrigate the golf courses.
“We would like to acknowledge the hard work and contributions of everyone in reaching this important milestone,“ said Fernando Odriozola, Chief Commercial Officer at Wavegarden. “Palm Desert is such an iconic area, and we can’t wait to start building the first Wavegarden Cove in California. Exchanging ‘Turf for Surf‘ will create an amazing oasis in the desert that will become a true asset for many people to enjoy.“
Wavegarden’s technology is currently used in eight surf parks worldwide. A ninth surf park is due to open this fall in Edinburgh, Scotland, followed by facilities in Virginia Beach, USA and São Paulo, Brazil. ■
