Denmark: New Theme Park for Copenhagen?

Denmark: New Theme Park for Copenhagen?

Nordhavn today.

As one of Denmark’s largest private investment projects in recent times, a 280 meter high tower and a leisure park, both dedicated to the famous Danish fairytale writer Hans Christian Andersen, are planned to be built in Nordhavn at the outskirts of Copenhagen. H.C. Andersen Adventure Tower and Park is the title of the project of Kurt Immanuel Pedersen and John Christensen, for which the estimated costs amount to approx. 873 million Euro (6.5 billion Danish Krones). The plans include the tower as Copenhagen’s new landmark, a 30,000 square meter large amusement and adventure park with indoor and outdoor offers and a public park with adjacent territories for both private and social housing units.

The multi-purpose tower is planned to be built opposite the quay for cruise ships, featuring an observation platform, a hotel, conference rooms, shops, offices and apartments. The amusement park, which will be developed and designed by Canada’s Forrec, will thematise Andersen’s popular fairytales. “The area is so large, so there is space to create some magical experiences both indoors and outdoors. The activities will provide entertainment for visitors of all ages, promoting creativity and innovation for children and young people […],” promised Pedersen and Christensen.

Fundraising is underway to find private investors willing to provide the financial funds to realize the large-scale project. In Odense (located on the Danish island of Funen), where Andersen was born, a new Hans Christian Andersen museum is currently under development – it will focus rather on his work than on his life (as already does the existing museum) and it is scheduled to open its doors in 2020 (c.f.
