England: New Indoor Waterpark in Coventry Takes Shape

Insgesamt sechs Rutschen liefert der türkische Hersteller Polin an den neuen Wasserpark in Coventry.

In Coventry, a town located in England’s West Midlands, construction works for the new Coventry City Centre Leisure Park – including an indoor waterpark – are underway. A particular characteristic of this project is its location directly next to an 800-year old church tower and spire, which has been constructed by the Franciscan monks in the early 1200s. Because of the historic site, construction requirements turned out to be an interesting challenge already during the planning phase.

Polin, the Turkey-based manufacturer of waterslides, will supply six of their signature slides to Coventry – the team had to put in a great load of creativity to accommodate the attractions into the tight space on the building’s third und most up-leveled floor: “The floorplan ultimately put the waterslides on the third floor, an especially unusual proposal. That meant Polin needed to specially adapt its rides to fit within the specific limitations of the building’s mostly round layout and its constricting ceiling height […],” explained Zeynep Canbaz, Polin Waterparks’ Senior Architect. The waterpark in Coventry will feature a “Mini Tsunami” slide as well as Polin’s “Navigatour” slide with three uphill sections – one with and two without waterjets. Furthermore, all slides except the Space Hole will incorporate dry-out exits without pools. The Space Hole will measure 14.62 meters in height, the other five slides (Tunnel Bodyslide, Sphere-Space Shuttle Combo, Mini Tsunami, A Navigatour & Looping Rockeet) will measure 11.50 meters in height each.

Besides the sliding fun, the leisure complex will host a 25 meter swimming pool, a gym, a climbing wall, squash courts, a dance studio, a day spa and an administrative area. FaulknerBrowns Architects were commissioned with the general planning, Buckingham Group Contracting Ltd. is the main supplier and the construction firm, the Neuman Aqua Ltd. company has been contracted as consultant. Coventry City Centre Leisure Park is set to open its gates in late 2018 or early 2019. (eap)
