Germany: Federal Horticultural Show 2021 in Erfurt Offers Attractive Visitor Experience
Since the end of April, visitors have been able to explore the grounds of this year’s “Bundesgartenschau” (BUGA; federal horticulture show), which is beeing held in Erfurt. On the 36-hectare large egapark in the South West of the city, around 15,000 square metres of planted flower beds make the area shine in bright colors. In addition, uniquely designed theme gardens, dedicated to e.g. a single plant species or international garden art, among other things, delight visitors. To implement elements presented in the exhibition in one’s private garden, it is possible to purchase some of the plants on display at the “Thuringian Gardeners’ Market”.
In addition to the gardens, the “Danakil” desert and jungle house is another visitor highlight. Along a barrier-free circular route, guests have the opportunity to enjoy with all their senses the search for water and learn about the plants and animals that live these special habitats. Visitors can explore Danakil with landscape scanners, “magic” monitors, an app or the audio guide. Also, the “Cyriaksburg Fortress”, which is centrally located in the egapark, is hosting a new permanent exhibition on horticulture as a modern place of communication and experience. The “Petersberg” in the centre of Erfurt is also part of BUGA 2021 and has been transformed into an event venue with garden themes and references to Erfurt’s horticultural tradition. Here, visitors can take a journey back in time through the garden epochs.
The BUGA grounds also offer play areas for the youngest visitors: for example, Wiegand Slides installed three stainless steel slides on a slope. In addition, the 35,000-square-metre large “GärtnerReich” playground, the play concept of which was designed by Rehwaldt Landschaftsarchitekten in 2016 and the play equipment realised by Werkform GmbH, invites children to play in a thematically aligned area.
