Germany: Leipzig Zoo Celebrates First Anniversary of Tropical Hall Gondwanaland
Leipzig Zoo’s new tropical hall “Gondwanaland”, opened in the middle of 2011 (cf. EAP 5/2011), celebrates its first anniversary this year. After nearly one year of operation, Burkhard Jung, mayor of the city of Leipzig, Volker Bremer, CEO of Leipzig Tourismus und Marketing GmbH and Zoo Director Jörg Junhold took stock. More than 2.32 million guests have visited the zoo’s new area since July 1st, 2011. The zoo was able to follow up on the previous record year of 2011 in which, for the first time ever, more than two million people visited the zoo. In the second year of operation, some alterations will find its way into Gondwanaland. Visitors will be able to support a Borneo rainforest reforestation project by means of a tree sponsorship. In the afternoon hours zookeepers will additionally inform guests about some of the species living at Gondwanaland. Moreover, the number of birds within the tropical hall will be increased. (eap)
