Germany: Theo Pagel New Member of WAZA Council
In July this year Cologne Zoo’s director Theo Pagel was elected to the council of the international umbrella association of all larger zoos and aquariums, the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA). Pagel’s term of office has started this month. “The election is a distinction, not just for Cologne Zoo but also for me personally. I look forward to the new challenge of supporting the zoological gardens’ good work with regard to environmental education as well as nature and species protection on a global scale,” Pagel says. With Susan Hunt, Australian Perth Zoo’s director, WAZA also has a new president as of this month. A total of almost 1,300 zoos and aquariums visited by around 700 million people annually are part of WAZA. Furthermore, certain subsidiaries such as the American Zoo and Aquarium Association and the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria belong to WAZA. (eap)
