Museum of World Culture in Gothenburg Presents World of Games

The Världskulturmuseet (Museum of World Culture) in Gothenburg, Sweden, which is located right next to Liseberg theme park, has been presenting the new special exhibition “A World of Games” since earlier this month, which is dedicated to numerous board and social games across different cultures and the course of time. Visitors can learn more about the development and social functions of playing games together. A wide variety of formats are presented, from classic board games over role-playing and gambling to modern digital games and the eSports scene. Common elements and variations in game rules among different global societies are highlighted through exhibits, signage and media content. Guests are also invited to get playful themselves – a range of diverse games, for both group and single players, is available to choose from.

“We’re showcasing everything from board games that are thousands of years old to the world’s first archaeological excavation of video games. This is an exhibition that brings together several generations,” says Lena Stammarnäs, exhibition producer at the Museum of World Culture. In addition to the World of Games, which will be on display until 18 August 2024 and then move to the Stockholm Enthnography Museum, the state-run facility, which opened in 2004, is still hosting the special exhibition “Viva México” until the end of this month, as well as the permanent presentations “Crossroads”, “Together”, “Democracy does not exist – we make it” and the artistically designed “Matrix” area on the outdoor grounds. From 30 June this year, visitors will be able to discover another new exhibition at the Världskulturmuseet, “Ultra – Football and Politics in the Mediterranean”. (eap)
