Netherlands: Madurodam Celebrates George Maduro’s 100th Birthday
Following the opening of the new indoor attraction “Hof van Nederland” at Miniaturpark Madurodam last summer (cf. EAP, issue 1/2016), the park recently announced it is organizing various activities in memory of George Maduro, the park’s name giver, who would have celebrated his 100th birthday this summer. During World War II, Maduro put up resistance against the Nazi regime, before he died in the Dachau concentration camp on February 8, 1945. In honor of Maduro, Madurodam was founded in the city of The Hague in 1952.
This year, the park wants to remind of Maduro’s life and courage. For this reason, it has commissioned artist Jikke van Loon to create a new monument. The artwork will be donated to the Municipality of The Hague and unveiled at George Maduroplein on July 15, Maduro’s birthday. On the same day, the American author Kathleen Brandt-Carey's biography “Ridder zonder vrees of blaam” (Engl.: “Knight without fear or blame”) on Maduros life will be published. On April 21 already, a Dachau lecture, which is initiated by the Netherlands Dachau Committee and pays special attention to Maduro, will be held at the park. (eap)
