Northern Europe‘s Largest Aquarium Opened in Denmark’s Öresund Region

The National Aquarium Denmark, also called “Den Blå Planet“, „The Blue Planet“, was opened in Copenhagen in March of this year. With the futuristic architecture of the building, located just 15 minutes south of Copenhagen centre, the new aquarium has already become a landmark for Copenhagen and the Öresund Region. The architecture of the building, designed by Danish architecture firm 3XN, is inspired by the spiraling patterns in nature. The outside of the building, covered in aluminum shingles, reflects the sky and the sea. With 20,000 animals from 450 different species in 53 aquariums and habitats with 7 million liters of water the operators of the year-round opened aquarium want to inform, inspire, entertain and elucidate 700,000 guests annually. The largest aquarium of the facilty, “The Ocean Tank”, is home to hammerhead sharks and other tropical fish in 4.1 million litres of warm saltwater. They can be observed through a 16 x 8 meter panorama window or from a tunnel. The total investment volume for the virtually 10,000 square meter large building amounts to 700 million DKK (around 94 million EUR). (eap)
