Opening of New Traveling Exhibition “Multifaceted Insects: Diversity|Endangerment|Protection” at Rostock Zoo
It’s not just polar bears, elephants and apes that are threatened. The extent of insect mortality is also becoming increasingly clear. As part of the project “ProInsect”, which was funded in the federal program “Biological Diversity” by Germany’s Federal Agency for Nature Conservation with funds from the Federal Ministry for the Environment and implemented by the Leibniz Institute for the Analysis of Biodiversity Change (LIB) in cooperation with the Museum Association of the North and Baltic Sea Region e.V. (NOR e.V.), the Rostock Zoo in collaboration with the Zoological Institute of the University of Rostock presents until September 3, 2023 the traveling exhibition “Multifaceted Insects: Diversity|Endangerment|Protection”. Zoo Director Antje Angeli, Environment Minister Dr. Till Backhaus and Rector of the University of Rostock Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Schareck jointly opened the interactively designed exhibition.
“The exhibition takes our visitors on a scientific journey into the world of insects. It draws attention to the enormous importance of insects in an entertaining way, conveys astonishing insights and clarifies our responsibility for their conservation. It concerns us all how we can better protect these fascinating animals,” says zoo director Angeli. Various hands-on and media stations invite visitors to discover, create, listen and reflect. The exhibition can be found in the Darwineum’s Spiegelsaal in the zoo. Every Wednesday, there are also public tours of the show, including insect presentations. Starting at Easter, parts of the exhibition and additional experiment stations will also be on display in the Atelier Natur. In addition, there will also be a summer vacation program and other action days at the zoo that tie in with the insect project. (eap)
