Sweden: “Solar Egg“ Egg-Shaped Sauna at Icehotel Jukkasjärvi

Sweden‘s Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi is temporarily hosting the “Solar Egg“ egg-shaped sauna, which was created by the Bigert&Bergström artist duo in 2017. In collaboration with the Icehotel, the Solar Egg is supposed to sensitize guests to the difference between heat and cold and create awarness for global warming. “We are focusing more and more of our artistry on the climate issue, and it is extremely important to point out how quickly the glaciers in the Arctic are melting, not least in Kebnekaise [Sweden’s highest mountain],” explain the artists Mats Bigert and Lars Bergström. Luca Roncoroni, Creative Director at the Icehotel adds: “This winter, Icehotel celebrates its 30th birthday, and it feels especially important to welcome Solar Egg here. The climate issue is a focal point of our daily work and vital for our existence […].“

The Solar Egg, which is equipped with 69 golden panels and a heart-shaped wood-fire burner, was orginally created for Swedish real estate company Riksbyggen, and is now a world-wide art phenomenon travelling around the globe. Visitors were able to enjoy the sauna attraction in several Swedish cities as well as in Paris, the USA and Copenhagen. (eap)
