Augsburg Spickelbad Planned to be Rebuilt
(eap) According to plans drawn up by the city council’s sports committee Augsburg’s Spickelbad will be rebuilt at a cost of almost 40 million euros. An investigation by the structural engineering office has shown that the Spickelbad is not worth preserving for economic, energy, static and technical reasons and that a new building will be more sustainable, environmentally friendly and barrier-free. Bernd Zitzelsberger, representative of the CSU City Council fraction on the Augsburg City Sports Advisory Board, says the following:
“I am pleased that we are now tackling the Spickelbad! Thus, after more than five decades Augsburg gets a modern indoor swimming pool again. In doing so, we want to create added value for all groups, which will be realized with a design competition. To this end, we would like the new Spickelbad to be equipped as far as possible with eight to ten 25-meter swimming lanes, a toddler area with a paddling pool for getting used to water and a 1- and 3-meter diving board. Our canoeists would thus have good indoor training facilities near the canoe course. Of course, the new Spickelbad will be completely barrier-free and will continue to be available for water ball sports. During the construction phase, it is essential that we provide sufficient replacement water space: The indoor pools in Göggingen and Haunstetten, for example, could be open longer into the summer months so that swimming courses as well as school and club swimming can take place, public swimming can continue, and an area is available to the public in case of inclement weather […].”
If the project is implemented, the construction of the new building could last until 2030. Augsburg’s municipal indoor swimming pools have been in need of action for years, so it is to be hoped that the plans for a new Spickelbad building will go ahead. ■
