Belgium: Comics Station Antwerp Now Part of Plopsa Group
In EAP issue 4/2017 we presented you with the indoor park Comics Station Antwerp, which is situated in the historic station building of the Belgian city and features some of the country’s most iconic comic characters. Unfortunately, the park performed below expectations as to the predicted results and annual visitor numbers so that the park was in the red. At the end of 2019, shortly before bankruptcy, salvation was near: the indoor park was sold to the Belgian Plopsa Group, operator of several amusement parks in Europe.
In the next years, Plopsa will invest six million of euros to renovate the park. Most of the comic brands represented in the park will stay, while a few of the attractions will have to make way, such as the slides inside the building. The other six existing attractions will continue to be part of the offer and will shine in new splendor after a make-over, with some of them featuring new comic characters from the Studio 100 universe. In addition, new attractions will be added in the future.
The building permission (for all the structural changes that will be necessary) has recently been filed and now Plopsa is waiting for approval. The group intends to reopen the park at the end of 2021 under the new name Plopsa Station Antwerp, with new attractions, new decoration and a completely new atmosphere.
