Belgium: Construction Start for New Multi-Million-Project “Sanctuary” at Pairi Daiza
According to Pairi Daiza, the “biggest greenhouse in the world” is scheduled to open in 2024. The first construction work has now begun on the more than 100-million-euro project for the new area named “Sanctuary”, which will be covered by a 40,000-square-meter, 22-meter-high glass roof and under which the climatic conditions from Central and Latin America will be recreated including metre-high palm and tropical trees. The new indoor area, which will have a temperature of about 24 degrees Celsius, will allow the Belgian zoo to have extended opening hours in the future, as “Sanctuary” can be visited even in bad or cold weather. Animal inhabitants in the area will include monkeys and butterflies, while visitors will also be able to admire manatees and sharks in the spacious areas.
As in “The Last Frontier” and “The Land of the Cold” (see EAP 6/20), guests will also be able to book special overnight experiences. Another special highlight will be an underwater restaurant. (eap)
