Berlin’s Wellenbad am Spreewaldplatz to Be Overhauled and Modernized

After 36 years, the Wellenbad am Spreewaldplatz in Berlin is being completely renovated. Guests are still able to visit the leisure pool, which belongs to Berliner Bäder-Betriebe (BBB), until 30 June. The refurbishment and modernization, costing around 42 million euros, is scheduled to begin in the summer. “This is the largest single investment that BBB has ever been able to make in its corporate history,” says board chairman Dr. Johannes Kleinsorg. Planning is being carried out by the Berlin-based architectural firm of AHM Architekten. The extensive work is expected to take at least three and a half years.

While the building will be completely deconstructed and rebuilt, the sauna area will also undergo a complete redesign and modernization. Furthermore, a new wide slide next to the wave pool will be added. The diving pool will receive a height-adjustable floor so that the pool can also be used for courses in the future. The sanitary facilities and changing rooms will also be renovated. Overall, the pool complex will receive a barrier-free design. The roof will receive new insulation and sealing as well as photovoltaic elements.

In addition to the Wellenbad am Spreewaldplatz, two other Berliner Bäder-Betriebe facilities are being refurbished this year, the Stadtbad Schöneberg and the Schwimmhalle Zingster Strasse. Renovation or repair work is also scheduled at the Schwimmhalle Sewanstrasse, the Stadtbad Wilmersdorf, the Kombibad Mariendorf and the summer pool at the Kombibad Spandau Süd. A total of around 152 million euros is available to the BBB for investments this year. Further partial or complete refurbishments are planned in the coming years, including at the Stadtbad Mitte, the Sommerbad am Insulaner and the Kombibad Mariendorf. New buildings are also planned, including the Multifunktionsbad Pankow. (eap)
