Canada: WhiteWater and Swim Drink Fish Together Promote Environmental Sustainability
In recent years, the topic of sustainability has also been brought more into the focus of attention in the leisure and aquatics industry. More and more companies have committed themselves to corporate social responsibility (CSR) and are also focusing on sustainability in marketing. For example, on the occasion of today’s “World Water Day 2022”, the Canadian waterslide expert WhiteWater West announced its corporate sponsorship in cooperation with the Canadian non-profit organization Swim Drink Fish from Toronto, which advocates for safe and healthy waters. As part of its social responsibility strategy, WhiteWater participates in such and similar initiatives that extend beyond the attractions industry. Part of the strategy is to donate one percent of corporate profits annually to a water-related NGO (non-governmental organization) and to motivate its own employees to take on social and environmental responsibility themselves.
In this context, WhiteWater sponsors so-called “Seabins”, which are essentially garbage cans attached to a dock that skim the surface of the water to capture floating debris. Swim Drink Fish removes and recycles the garbage as well as sorts and characterizes it to understand where it comes from and what it is composed of, sharing this valuable data with governments and businesses for further waste prevention. The connection to the leisure industry is obvious for Una deBoer, Chief Marketing Officer of WhiteWater: “It’s tangible proof to say to water and theme parks: avoid single-use plastic!”
Currently, there are 860 Seabins worldwide, with four in operation in Vancouver, in the vicinity of which WhiteWater’s corporate headquarters is located. The company is sponsoring the installation and maintenance of more Seabins in the region. (eap)
