China: Disneyland Shanghai to Open First “Zootopia“ Theme Land
This week, Shanghai Disney Resort announced its plans for the already second expansion of the park since its opening in 2016: “Zootopia” will be the eighth theme land at the park, featuring a completely new attraction, entertainment offerings, merchandise shops and gastronomic facilities. It will further be the first theme area dedicated to Disney’s “Zootopia” animation series (which was released in 2016) at any Disney park worldwide. Visitors can look forward to immersing themselves into the world of the anthropomorphic animals, meeting the main characters, rabbit “Judy Hopps”, the fox “Nick Wilde” and others.
“We are thrilled to announce that Shanghai Disneyland will be home to the world’s first Zootopia-themed land. The rapid rate of expansion at Shanghai Disney Resort demonstrates our confidence and commitment to the company’s future development in China,” said Bob Chapek, Chairman of Parks, Experiences and Consumer Products, The Walt Disney Company.
Yang Jinsong, Chairman of Disney’s joint venture partner for Shanghai Disney Resort – Shanghai Shendi Group – added, “ […] Shanghai Disneyland has rapidly become one of the fastest growing Disney parks […]. This new expansion will provide our guests with an even richer selection of offerings, and will further boost our market competitiveness,” commented Jinsong.
Shanghai Disney Resort was opened in summer 2016 as the first Disney park on mainland China (cf. EAP 5/2016), some two years later followed by the first expansion of the park with the opening of “Disney Toy Story Land” (cf. EAP news from Dec 13th, 2017). Construction works for “Zootopia” are scheduled to begin later this year. (eap)
