China: Shanghai Disneyland Welcomes Ten Millionth Guest

Since its opening on June 16th, 2016, Shanghai Disneyland has recently welcomed its ten millionth guest, in only eleven months of operation. The Shanghai destination is the sixth Disney resort worldwide and at the same time the first in mainland China. With a one-day adult ticket price of 370 RMB (approx. 47 Euro) the entrance fee is relatively low in comparison to other Disney parks, but appropriate based on the average Chinese income. Shortly after its opening, a one-day ticket for Shanghai Disneyland was at 499 RMB (around 68 Euro, c.f. EAP, 5/16). Besides several classical Disney attractions the park’s portfolio is specially tailored to the Chinese culture, which can be seen in the Chinese version of “Tomorrowland” or in the “Garden of Imaginations” (c.f. EAP, 5/15).

Shanghai Disneyland has started its journey with great success, but competition is already underway: the opening of the Universal Studios Beijing is scheduled for 2020, as well as the opening of the first Chinese Six Flags park in Haiyan. Shanghai will also see the opening of a new Legoland park, for which the opening date has not been announced to date. But first, visitors to Disneyland Shanghai can look forward to the park’s first anniversary celebrations on June 16th this year, when they can enjoy special offers such as limited-time-only merchandise and special dining experiences.
