Denmark: New City Park Planned in Downtown Copenhagen
In downtown Copenhagen, right around the corner of the city hall, a new recreational city park called “Vesterbro Passage“ is planned. The project includes the transformation of a multi-lane road to a 14,000 square metres-large city park. To provide Copenhageners with a new recreational space, the asphalt is supposed to be replaced by trees, bushes and illumination. With this project, the city of Copenhagen wants to create a new room for tranquility. Danish architecture firm Gehl, artist Elafur Eliasson and architect Sebastian Behmann of architecture buero Studio Other Spaces are part of the project planning.
“Vesterbro Passage city park will be a vital public space in the heart of the city. […] we know there is a need for more, freely accessible, and green public spaces. For Copenhageners, this city park can contribute to that need in an area with relatively few larger green areas. […]“ explains Birgitte Bundesen Svarre, Director at Gehl.
Lars Liebst, CEO of Tivoli Gardens, which are located in the direct neighborhood of the future projetc, also sees the positive value for the city: “Covid-19 has emphazised the need for more green breathing spaces in the cities. In the proposed city park right outside Tivoli Gardens, Copenhageners get a new and exciting urban space and the most beautiful bike route in the city center. […]“ (eap)
