England: Brighton Hosts New Observation Tower Attraction
“i360”, a new futuristic observation tower equipped with a “donut”-shaped glass cabin viewing platform, was recently opened in the British seaside resort of Brighton (c.f. EAP news from October 20th, 2015). Within 20 minutes, guests are carried up to the height of 138 meters to enjoy a spectacular view of the town and its surroundings.
During the day, the experience takes approx. 20 minutes, while guests can enjoy the “flight” and the sky bar 30 minutes in the evening. Guinness World Records lists the 162 meter high building as the world’s highest and slimmest observation tower featuring a moving platform. The “flying donut” has been designed by David Marks and Julia Barfield – the architects, who also created the plans for the well-known London Eye observation wheel. The design of “i360” is a modernistic interpretation of English seaside resort piers. Furthermore, the French company POMA has been responsible for the development of the observation platform and its mechanics. In good weather conditions, guests can view up to 42 kilometers in the distance. “As with the London Eye, the most important ingredient is the very slow ride up to a fantastic view,” said architect Barfield. The 55 million Euro project has been financed by British Airways. (eap)
