GB: Planning Application for New Eden Project North Submitted
With the Eden Project North, which will be developed in Morecambe in the north-west of England, a second Eden location is planned to be developed following the example of Eden in Cornwall, which already opened in 2001. The planning application for the new Eden destination has now been submitted to Lancaster City Council. Botanical gardens and small-scale rainforests will grow under the four shell-shaped dome roofs, which are to be made of timber and flexible transparent membrane with integrated solar cells, to demonstrate the interaction of plants and people to visitors in a unique way. Outside, the area will also be attractive to visitors with further gardens that reflect the flora, geology and rhythm of the coastal region.
David Harland, Chief Executive of Eden Project International, said: “The submission of the Eden Project North planning application is the culmination of years of hard work from the Eden team and our partners and a reflection of our many conversations with the Morecambe community. Eden Project North is a true collaborative effort and everyone who has taken part in our consultations, both formal and informal, can be confident that their input has helped shape this project. We are enormously proud of how this project has developed and hugely grateful to everyone who has contributed to it, especially considering the incredibly difficult circumstances of the last 18 months.“
The company has earmarked an investment of 125 million pounds (approx. 145.9 million euros) for the development of Eden Project North, which will be financed by private and public funds. The new location is expected to welcome up to one million visitors a year and create more than 400 jobs. (eap)
