Germany: Berlin Zoo – Renovation Works at Löwentor Entrance Have Started

In cooperation with Berlin-based architectural firm dan pearlman Erlebnisarchitektur GmbH, Berlin Zoo has established a development plan between April 2014 and February 2015, which foresees the implementation of a number of long-term measures within the next 15 to 20 years. Furthermore, the plan includes the realization of several concrete short-term projects.

Recently, the renovation works for the “Löwentor” (Engl.: “Lion’s Gate”) entrance at Hardenberg place have started. Within the next few months four additional ticket counters, a service center and a zoo shop will be built there. In the future, a barrier-friendly turnstile will be used for entry and exit. The new entrance will be oriented towards the classical pavilions and highlight the Löwentor gate, which is listed as a protected monument. According to plan, the costs for the complete reconstruction works will not exceed an amount of four million euros. “As we plan to finish the conversion works before the start of the summer holidays 2016, we hope for a mild winter. During the construction phase, the entrance will still be open to guests. And let’s not forget that with the beautiful Elefantentor our zoo has a second entrance,” zoo director Dr. Andreas Knieriem explains. Each year about three million guests visit Berlin Zoo, making it one of the most popular destinations in the German capital. (eap)
