Germany: Renovation Work at Osnabrück Zoo Continues
At Osnabrück Zoo all signs point to change – already in May this year, the ground-breaking ceremony for the new “Water Worlds“ area took place (cf. EAP news of 18 May 2021), followed by the opening of the new “Mapungubwe“ lion enclosure in July (cf. EAP news of 15 July 2021) and an extensive modernisation of the “Tetra Aquarium“ in October (cf. EAP news of 28 Oct 2021). And the work throughout the zoo facility continues: The outdoor area of the zebras recently received a new floor, a new drainage system and the subsoil was consolidated to be prepared for its future inhabitants:. Due to the creation of a new elephant park, the zoo‘s rhinos will be relocated here. The chimpanzee enclosure received a kind of winter garden including floor and wall heating. By filling in the ditch between the visitor window shields and the area around the monkey temple, zoo visitors will soon be able to observe the twelve pig monkeys up close.
Brand new is an enclosure for the small antelope species Kirk’s dik-dik. “Since we have socialised our bush hyrax with the hyrax, the former enclosure of the bush hyrax in the giraffe house has become free. We have extensively renovated the area for the Kirk‘s dik-dik and created places for them with different substrates such as sand, straw or mineral mix. An outdoor enclosure for long-horned goats has also been added,“ explains Andreas Wulftange, zoological director of Osnabrück Zoo. (eap)
