Germany: Tierpark Hellabrunn Munich to Build New Educative Area „Mühlendorf“
The animal park Tierpark Hellabrunn located in the German city of Munich recently announced the plans for its new “Mühlendorf” area, which will be built in the already existing children’s zoo area to enable guests to experience the local fauna.
The focus will be laid on the Alpine Foothills’ biodiversity, which includes endangered domestic animals such as the Murnau-Werdenfels Cattle, the Bavarian Goose and the Girgentana Goat. Furthermore, the park plans to host a bee colony and a fish-farming, to support the protection efforts of endangered local fish species. “Mühlendorf’s” houses and stables are to be built in the style of Bavarian farmhouses to create a landscape with alpine flair.
The already existing zoo school will be rebuilt as the future center of “Mühlendorf” to provide a practically orientated educational offer with direct animal contacts. “We want to show how many unique and wild animals directly live on our doorstep. ‘Mühlendorf’ will turn children and adults into researchers and show our domestic biodiversity in a global context,” explained Rasem Baban, director of the animal park. On a total area of 23,200 square meters, “Mühlendorf” will also offer a farm shop as well as a beer garden to complete the offer for visitors.
The Berlin-based company dan pearlman Erlebnisarchitekur GmbH is in charge of the architectonical development of the approx. 13 million Euro project. “We are delighted to develop the “Mühlendorf” project and to create an exclusive visitor experience for young and old to discover the local flora and fauna,” said Kieran Stanley, CEO of dan Pearlman. The construction works will begin in December this year – the opening of “Mühlendorf” is scheduled for summer 2019. (eap)
