Germany: Zoo Rostock Completes Renovation of Lynxes Enclosure
During the past year, Germany’s Zoo Rostock, which accommodates about 4,500 animals from 450 species, restructured and modernised its enclosure for the Eurasian Lynx, after the passing of its last lynx resident Candy (22) last year. The outdoor area has been enlarged from 420 to 590 square metres and now features more climbing opportunities and relaxation zones for the animals, which are also domestic in large forest areas in Germany. “We completely overhauled the enclosure with a focus on keeping the forest character. The natural vegetation provides cover for the lynxes and is also an enrichment for their environment. There are plenty of alternative and retreat places available,“ explains zoo curator Antje Angeli.
Additionally, also the indoor area of the enclosure including six sleeping boxes and one birth box have been renewed. With Isa from Tiergarten Schönbrunn and Loke, who will come to Rostock in September from a Swedish zoo, two new “furry“ residents have already been found. (eap)
