Hong Kong: Completely Overhauled Peak Tram Increases Passenger Numbers & Delights with Media Content
The historic “Peak Tram” funicular, which was commissioned in 1888 and enables locals and tourists to comfortably reach Hong Kong’s 552-meter high Victoria Peak, now offers passengers a more modern ride experience including integrated media technology thanks to a recently completed general overhaul. In collaboration with Garaventa AG, a member of Austria’s Doppelmayr Group, new vehicles (manufactured by CWA) with space for 210 passengers (previous capacity: 120 passengers) were installed, the entire ropeway technology including conveyor and control systems was renewed and the track foundations and bridge structures were reinforced.

The Austrian company AV Stumpfl supplied several of its “PIXERA” media servers to feed the LED display surfaces with informative content. Audio System Consultants were responsible for the system integration on and in the completely renewed funicular, while CosmoVision provided the technical support.
To date, the Peak Tram has carried more than six million passengers per year. Thanks to the new, larger vehicles and the equally modernized stations, which are now barrier-free for strollers and wheelchairs, the average annual transport volume is expected to increase even further. The modernized funicular, operated by Peak Tramways, now achieves a capacity of 1,576 pph. (eap)
