Ireland: Funding for Brand-New Kilkenny Visitor Attraction Secured
The name Kilkenny is certainly known to most as an Irish export beer brand that, along with Guinness, is one of the popular beers of the Emerald Isle. In fact, the beer was once brewed in the medieval town of Kilkenny, located in the southeast of the Republic of Ireland. In addition to Kilkenny Castle, the town’s sights include numerous well-preserved churches and monasteries as well as the historic town hall (Tholsel) and the Medieval Mile Museum. A new visitor attraction is no to be built on this very site by spring 2023, which will include the town hall as well as the museum and St. Mary’s churchyard.
The Irish tourism authority Fáilte Ireland, in cooperation with Kilkenny County Council and the Kilkenny Civil Trust, has now provided funding of 3.2 million euros for the new Medieval Kilkenny Experience, as the attraction will be called. The intention is to increase the attractiveness of Kilkenny’s historic city center and thus attract more national and international visitors and create new jobs. (eap)
