Japan/USA: Large-Scale Expansion Announced for Tokyo DisneySea

Yesterday, The Walt Disney Company and Japan’s Oriental Land (operator of Tokyo Disney Resort®) announced their plans for a large-scale expansion of Tokyo DisneySea®, which is to be expanded by a new themed port (the eighth in total) including a luxury hotel.

The theming of the new area, which is to be developed on a site currently used as visitor parking lot directly adjacent to Tokyo DisneySea and Tokyo Disneyland, will feature a magical fountain, leading to fantastic worlds around the beloved Disney IPs Frozen, Tangled and Peter Pan. A number of four family-friendly attractions is to be included in the new area, the opening of which is scheduled for fiscal year 2022 (starts on April 1st, 2022 and ends on March 31st, 2023). In addition, expansion plans include the construction of a new luxury hotel with 475 rooms directly located in Tokyo DisneySea. Around 1.9 billion Euros (250 billion Yen) are to be invested into the expansion measures.

Also, visitors to Tokyo Disneyland, the second related park of Tokyo Disney Resort®, can already look forward to new attractions and entertainment offerings, which are largely scheduled to be launched in 2020 (cf. our Disney Report in EAP, 3/18). Upon the planned expansion of both parks, The Walt Disney Company and Oriental Land announced the extension of their license agreement for the Disney theme parks and other key licenses until 2076.
