Klimahaus Bremerhaven Celebrates Its 15th Anniversary
(eap) The Klimahaus Bremerhaven science and experience center is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year. Since opening at the end of June 2009, the attraction for all those interested in the topics of weather and climate change has welcomed more than six million visitors. The basic idea of the center is to arouse curiosity about the beauty of the earth and its sensitivity, living conditions and how they are changing due to the changing climate and ways of countering climate change.
The Klimahaus not only serves as an extracurricular place of learning, but is also known throughout Germany as an event location. According to the operator, a total of 80 percent of visitors come from a radius of approximately 4 hours. On an exhibition area of 11,500 square meters, there are 143 exhibition rooms and 250 different animal species to discover. The Klimahaus, which is soon home to the new permanent exhibition “Weather Extremes”, offers 120 workplaces.
Since the beginning of 2024, the Klimahaus has been operated by Bremen wind power pioneer and entrepreneur Klaus Meier. He was appointed in the summer of 2023 by the municipal company BEAN (owner of the Klimahaus) following a tendering process and succeeds Arne Dunker, who shaped and supported the Klimahaus from the very first idea, initially as project manager and later as managing director.
The Klimahaus Bremerhaven aims to be a pioneer in the field of climate education and a marketplace for knowledge transfer in five years’ time: “We want to be the first port of call for people committed to climate protection and a hotspot for discussions on climate solutions on a large scale,” says Ingrid Hayen, Managing Director of the facility since January 1, 2024, explaining the new ambition that comes with the change of operator. A further goal for 2024 is the transformation into a non-profit limited company. Profits are to remain in the Klimahaus in future and be fully available for investment in exhibitions and events. ■
