New Visitor Centre Planned for UNESCO Geopark Muskau Arch

(eap) The UNESCO Geopark Muskau Arch, which stretches across the German-Polish border, is to receive a new, modern visitor centre. The project, which involves an investment of several million euros, envisages an edutainment centre with interactive stations and immersive experiences designed to bring the geology of the region and its socio-economic and industrial history to life. The development is being led by the Fürst-Pückler-Park Bad Muskau Foundation, which will also operate the centre scheduled to open in 2028.

The new visitor centre will comprise the historic Kavalierhaus and a newly constructed extension. The storyline of the visitor centre will be thematically based on three narratives. The first explores the history of the region – from its geological formation to its industrial and cultural evolution – highlighting how the forces of nature have laid the foundation for centuries of economic and social development. The second examines change and disruption, highlighting the profound shifts in climate, economy and industry that have continuously reshaped both the landscape and human life. The third topic will be dedicated to the Anthropocene and present how human activity has changed the planet – from industrialisation and resource extraction to the climate challenges of today. A global perspective will be adopted, taking the Muskau Arch as a concrete example region.

Sarner International has been appointed to lead the planning and design of the new visitor centre – the British company plans to develop an experience based on immersive storytelling, state-of-the-art technologies and interactive exhibits. ■
