Portugal: Pavilhão do Conhecimento Science Center Launches New Circus-Themed Kids Area
The Pavilhão do Conhecimento – Centro Ciência Viva science center, which was opened in 1999 on the grounds of Expo 98 in Lisbon, has recently launched a new children’s experience area dubbed “Tcharan! – Circus of Science”, aimed at young guests aged between three and twelve years who can try out a number of interactive fun stations. The attractions provide kids with different challenges related to science: in the Kaleidoscope mirror cabinet it is important not to lose the orientation. The giant clown doll “Hercules” proves the laws of forces and motion, and the “Frog’s Tongue” shows kids that things are not always as they seem …
These and other interactive stations can be found in the new science experience area, which was designed and implemented by Dutch NorthernLight company. “We came up with the metaphor of the circus for this discovery area, as it has such powerful connotations to magic, emotion and thrills. We created a surreal space with things that seem impossible at first glance,” explained Steven Schaeken, Director of NorthernLight.
Pavilhão do Conhecimento – Centro Ciência Viva covers an area of over 3,000 square meters and offers a range of permanent and travelling exhibitions related to science, addressing both children and adults alike. (eap)
