Record Year in German Tourism – A Positive Development for Attractions

Vor allem auch Ferienparks zählen zu den Trendzielen.

(eap) Tourism in Germany reached a new milestone in 2024. According to the Federal Statistical Office, a total of 496.1 million overnight stays were recorded by domestic and foreign guests. This represents an increase of 1.9 percent compared to 2023 and 0.1 percent compared to the previous record year of 2019.

The number of overnight stays by German guests is particularly flourishing. This rose to 410.8 million in 2024, which corresponds to an increase of 1.1 percent compared to 2023. This exceeded the pre-corona level of 2019 by 1.3 percent. The number of overnight stays by guests from abroad rose by 5.4 percent to 85.3 million in 2024 compared to 2023.

“The current figures are a great success for German tourism. They show that Germany once again has a strong appeal as a travel destination,” emphasizes Reinhard Meyer, President of the German Tourism Association (DTV). “We are pleased with the positive result, but we must also face up to the challenges, such as the change in people’s travel behaviour, which is reflected in the fact that guests are booking their trips at ever shorter notice.”

The continuing upward trend in German tourism and changes in travel behavior are also reflected in the number of visitors to the country’s leisure and amusement parks, which we will be presenting to you shortly in the latest EAP Park Report (to be published in our March/April issue). Incidentally, a recent study by Center Parcs in collaboration with the Gesellschaft für Konsumforschung (GfK; Society for Consumer Research) also shows that leisure and vacation parks are becoming an increasingly popular choice for holidaymakers. The results show that 18 percent of about 1,000 surveyed people can imagine spending a vacation in a vacation park such as Center Parcs in the next five years, as the combination of nature, comfort and a wide range of leisure activities makes vacation parks an ideal choice for those seeking relaxation and active holidaymakers alike. An “experience package” that also defines theme parks…

The DTV is optimistic about the future of tourism in Germany: “We are confident that we will be able to build on the high level of 2024 in 2025. We will continue to work hard to achieve this.” ■
