Royal Caribbean Deploys Efficient Waste-to-Energy Systems on Two New Ships
(eap) International cruise line brand Royal Caribbean is looking to further strengthen its sustainability efforts. As part of its catalog of measures, in the future initially two of the group’s coming new ships – the “Icon of the Seas” and the “Silver Nova” (a ship of the associated European subsidiary Silversea Cruises) – will be equipped with a waste-to-energy system for the first time. Specifically, the Icon of the Seas, whose maiden voyage is scheduled for the end of this year, will see a Microwave-Assisted Pyrolysis (MAP) waste-to-energy system and the Silver Nova a Micro Auto Gasification (MAG) system in order to generate synthetic gas from solid waste directly on board and make the energy immediately usable for the ship.
The group’s further sustainability policy and efforts include goals such as reducing food waste by 50 percent by 2025. This is to be achieved, among other things, through the use of artificial intelligence (AI), but also through targeted staff training.
