South Korea: New “Wave Park“ Surf Facility Opened as Part of Two-Billion Dollar Waterfront Development Project
On Turtle Island in the South Korean city of Siheung, located about an hour’s drive away from Seoul, “Wave Park”, the “largest Wavegarden Cove surf facility in the world” (according to the manufacturer), recently opened to visitors. In cooperation with the real estate company Daewon Plus Group, the Spanish manufacturer Wavegarden developed the new artificial surf hotspot. Wave Park is part of a new 167,000 square meter mixed-use waterfront development project on Turtle Island.
The large-scale artificial wave pool was created as part of the first phase of the development project. The attraction offers twenty different wave sizes suitable for beginners and professionals equally. Josema Odriozola, CEO of Wavegarden, commented: “We are delighted to bring the incredible sport of surfing and beach lifestyle to South Korea. With consistent waves of different sizes and shapes, Wave Park is going to be the new beach of Seoul and the place to surf for families, professional surfers, and everyone in between.”
The Turtle Island waterfront project, which is estimated at a total investment sum of more than 1.7 billion euros (approx. two billion US dollars), will also offer areas for kayaks, stand-up paddling and swimming. Stage two of the development process foresees the construction of six hotels, convention centers, marinas and museums. (eap)
