South Padre Island / USA: Underground Transportation System to Connect Schlitterbahn Resort with Outdoor Waterpark

As of this summer, the newly opened Schlitterbahn Beach Resort and Indoor Waterpark will be connected with Schlitterbahn Beach Waterpark, both located in South Padre Island (TX), through an underground Transportainment® system. A new themed water transportation system will take guests from the outdoor waterpark (opened in 2001) to the new Resort & Indoor Waterpark opened last summer and vice versa. Guests will board four-person rafts at either of two loading stations. The rafts will then be sent down a 7.6 meter high drop into a nearly 116 meter long underground cavern filled with fog, sound and lighting effects. At the end of the cavern, the rafts will be transported to ground level again by a conveyor system. Now the park guests are right at their destination. “It would have been far easier to build a simple walk-through underground tunnel to connect our two great facilities, but that’s not the way Schlitterbahn does things,” said Jeff Henry, co-owner of Schlitterbahn. “Our guests expect world class waterpark fun and we deliver by keeping them entertained even as they move from one section of our property to another.” (eap)
