Spain: Free Falls High above Barcelona – Tibidabo Builds Drop Tower for 2024
Spain’s Tibidabo amusement park, located at an altitude of around 500 metres (on Barcelona's eponymous local mountain), will present a special novelty for thrill fans in the 2024 season: A Dop Tower that will allow a free-fall experience from a height of 50 metres. The tower, which is being manufactured by the Austrian company Funtime and will be realised on level one of the park next to the “Globus” attraction, will have a capacity for 24 guests. During the ascent and once at its highest point, the gondola will perform 360-degree turns so that passengers can enjoy a panoramic view of the park and the Catalan metropolis at their feet before getting the adrenaline rush of falling freely.
Instead of an electromagnetic brake, a state-of-the-art magnetic braking mechanism will be used so that no cable will be needed, further enhancing the experience. The electrical power required for operation will be around 300 kW, which (according to the park) is from the lowest to similar attractions. Thanks to the seats and safety harnesses’ design, guests as tall as 125 cm and more will be able to ride. (eap)
