Sweden: Liseberg to Surprise Visitors with New VR Experience on 116-Meter-High Drop Tower
To kick off the season on 23 April, Gothenburg’s Liseberg amusement park will present its guests with a new, thrilling VR experience that will be available on the park’s 116-meter-high free-fall tower “AtmosFear”. In “AtmosFear VR”, visitors are equipped with VR goggles to experience a customized sci-fi adventure while riding one of Europe’s highest drop tower rides. The virtual world passengers see through the VR goggles is precisely synchronized with the physical ride. Particularly exciting will be the moment when guests plummet from a height of almost 100 meters at speeds of 110km/h, feeling G-forces of up to 4g. “[…] It will be one of the most intense VR experiences in the world”, says Andreas Andersen, CEO of Liseberg.
The technically advanced VR experience, which has seen an investment of five million euros, was developed by German company VR Coaster in collaboration with Quarry Fold Studio. However, the experience, which is included in the ticket price, will only be temporary at the park. “We know that there are many guests who will miss Balder in the first months of the summer season. That is why we are opening AtmosFear VR as a worthy, temporary, replacement,” Andersen explains. The wooden coaster “Balder”, which opened in 2003, is currently undergoing extensive maintenance and re-tracking measures, and will not be re-opened until late summer.
Next year, Liseberg will celebrate its 100th anniversary and has planned numerous novelties to mark the special occasion, some of which will already be available to visitors this season. (eap)
