Tiny Giants – The Great Insect Adventure at Leipzig Zoo
(eap) Leipzig Zoo is hosting the new “Winzigen Giganten“ (Tiny Giants) special exhibition, the only one of its kind in Germany, until the end of this year. The exhibition features 27 XXL insect exhibits that are up to 2.50 meters high and three meters long. Visitors can discover, for example, the oversized leaf shield ant, glasswing butterfly or Chinese mantis. One focus is on Asian species, which relate to the campaign of the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums (EAZA) under the name “Vietnamazing”. The tiny giants can be found along the paths throughout the zoo. In keeping with the exhibition, an insect sticker sheet rally, discovery tours and craft activities will be offered on selected dates. Leipzig Zoo has collaborated with the American company Dino Don to create the tiny giants.
With the exhibition, the Saxon zoo aims at drawing attention to the importance of insects for the ecosystem and thus habitats. Furthermore, it focuses on their fascinating abilities and impressive details of their body structure. “The exhibition combines in a fascinating way getting to know animal species in connection with their habitats and shows why it is important to keep an eye on the protection of even the smallest ones,” says zoo director Prof. Jörg Junhold. ■
