Twelve Million Euro Modernization of Badewelt Waikiki Has Begun
The Hawaiian-themed Waikiki leisure pool complex in the Thuringian Vogtland region (Germany) keeps its doors closed to visitors for the next months, since the over 20-year-old facility sees comprehensive modernization works. Almost twelve million euros will be invested in the planned measures – one focus is put on the energetic optimization of the entire complex. But the existing children’s area is also to be modernized: In the future, it will be themed around the children’s book character “Käpt’n Sharky” (“Captain Sharky”, Coppenrath Verlag publishing house). Furthermore, the giant slides and the slide tower will be renewed. In addition, there will be a new family slide. Especially for the target group of teenagers, a designated “Teens Lounge” is planned, where young people will be able to relax in hanging chairs, for example. The sauna area will also be modernized. Last but not least, the Waikiki will be designed barrier-free throughout the entire facility. This includes the installation of two elevators. The Hamburg-based architectural firm of Geising + Böker was commissioned with the architectural planning.
The calculated investment sum of 11.65 million euros is being financed to 90 percent by the state of Thuringia, which has sent the city of Zeulenroda-Triebes, which operates the Waikiki via the Stadtwerke Zeulenroda GmbH company, a subsidy notice in the amount of 10.48 million euros. Thuringia’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Wolfgang Tiefensee, commented: “The Waikiki has been an important tourist attraction for over twenty years – especially for families with children. Thanks to the current investments, the leisure pool will now be modernized in many respects and thus become even more attractive. I am sure that all tourism in the dam region around Zeulenroda-Triebes will benefit from this.” The modernization work at Waikiki is scheduled to be completed by fall 2025. (eap)
