UK: Chessington World of Adventures Resort Celebrates Its 85th Anniversary
The British Chessington World of Adventures Resort celebrates its 85th anniversary today. First opened as a zoo in 1931, it was founded by Reginald Goddard, a Flight Lieutenant in World War I, who was looking for an accommodation facility for his collection of exotic animals. On July 28th, 1931, Goddard opened the Chessington Zoological Gardens to the public and it soon became a hugely popular attraction. According to history, the zoo already counted 200,000 visitors in its first season. At the beginning, the entertainment offer included circus shows and funfairs, but in 1987 a theme park was added to the zoo area, forming today’s Chessington World of Adventures Resort. Today the resort offers its visitors a large scale of attractions and leisure activities. (eap)
