UK: Gigantic Slide Project Planned at ArcelorMittal Orbit
Next spring, a 178 meter long slide will be attached to the ArcelorMittal Orbit located in London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park (cf. EAP News from September 12, 2012). The tower was designed by the British artist Anish Kapoor, who cooperates with Carsten Höller for the new slide project. The German-Belgian artist Höller has already created the design for two slides for his “Decision” exhibition that can currently be visited at Hayward Gallery as well as for several slides installed at the Tate Modern Gallery in 2006 (cf. EAP News from August 12, 2015). According to Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, the new slide will be the world’s longest tunnel slide. At a speed of up to 15 miles per hour (about 24 kilometers per hour) it will take visitors 40 seconds to go down the tube. For the time being there are no detailed information about which manufacturer will deliver the gigantic slide. But as Germany’s Josef Wiegand GmbH & Co. KG was involved in both slide projects mentioned above, it is not unlikely that the company will equip the ArcelorMittal Orbit with a slide as well. (eap)
