UK: Merlin Entertainments Seeks to Secure Long-term Existence of the London Eye

Merlin Entertainments, owner and operator of the London Eye, announces measures to secure the long-term future of the visitor attraction. Permissions to build the London Eye for the millennium celebration included a condition that the local planning authority must decide whether to retain the Ferris wheel beyond 2028. Accordingly, Merlin plans to submit an application to Lambeth Council, the local planning authority, to secure the long-term existence of the visitor magnet.

“The London Eye is a UK success story with a global reach. When it first opened at the turn of the century, no-one could have envisaged it would become synonymous with all that is great about our capital city. As the capital’s most visited paid for attraction, it continues to be enjoyed by millions of guests every year, it is now time for us to secure its long-term future through this application to Lambeth Council,” explains Merlin’s Divisional Director for Midway Attractions, Mike Vallis.

Merlin is currently in pre-applications discussions with Lambeth Council and plans to submit the application in spring 2023. The city council will then decide on the continued existence of the London Eye. (eap)
