UK: On the Trail of the Anglo-Saxons – New Visitor Experience Planned for Winchester
In cooperation with the Hampshire Cultural Trust, whose umbrella covers 23 visitor attractions in the county of Hampshire, design company Sarner, computer game producer Ubisoft and creative company Sugar Creative are developing a new immersive visitor attraction for the city of Winchester in South-East England. During the experience, which is set to open in late 2022, guests will be transported to the 9th century and the time of the Angel-Saxons in Winchester. Immersive storytelling, audio-visual media and contemporary exhibits will be complemented by content from the action role-playing game “Assassin‘s Creed Valhalla“ and the educational game “Discovery Tour: Viking Age“ – for both computer games, historic Winchester already served as the template for various sections of the games.
The attraction will tackle warfare and conflict with the Vikings, but also more subtle subjects such as daily life, trade and the profound influence of this time and place on the English language. In addition, guests will be able to explore Winchester guided by an AR app created by Sugar Creative.
Ed Cookson, Projects Director at Sarner International, said: “We are thrilled to be able to bring the rich history and drama of Anglo-Saxon Winchester to life through the incredible assets of Hampshire Cultural Trust and the engaging environments and worldbuilding of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Visitors are going to love exploring and experiencing the stories and settings of this turbulent but vibrant time.”
Paul Sapwell, Chief Executive of Hampshire Cultural Trust, commented: “We’re delighted to bring Sarner International on board to help us develop our vision of 9th century Winchester, creating a unique and immersive experience that will bring this pivotal period of English history to life for our visitors.” (eap)
