Vienna Zoo with New Photovoltaic Plant
(eap) Vienna’s Tiergarten Schönbrunn (Vienna Zoo) recently unveiled its new photovoltaic system on the roof of the historic Organg Utan building. 190 square meters in size, the plant is expected to generate up to 40,000 kWh of electricity per year. “The Tiergarten Schönbrunn with its variety of animals is a crowd puller for guests from Austria and abroad and at the same time a best practice example for sustainability. As the oldest zoo in the world, it is one of Austria’s best-known tourist attractions and contributes to promoting tourism, creating jobs and strengthening nature conservation,” says Austria’s State Secretary for Tourism, Susanne Kraus-Winkler.
The new photovoltaic system on the “ORANG.erie” is the fifth at total that has gone into operation at the zoo, showing that a combination of new technologies and world cultural heritage can succeed. Zoo Director Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck explains: “Our commitment to sustainability encompasses all areas: from feed procurement and catering to energy management. Responsibility for animals, people and the environment is firmly anchored in our corporate principles.” ■
