World-Record Ropeway from Doppelmayr to Be Built in the Caribbean

World-Record Ropeway from Doppelmayr to Be Built in the Caribbean

It will feature a length of 6.6 kilometers – the longest gondola lift in the world! We are talking about a unique tourism project that is being created in the island nation of Dominica in the eastern Caribbean. There, more precisely in the Morne Trois Pitons National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), one can find the second largest hot spring in the world, Boiling Lake. The area around the hot spring is to be developed and made accessible to visitors as part of an ecologically and economically sustainable concept – created by Input Projektentwicklungs GmbH in cooperation with Outdoor Engineers AG. Until now, a seven-hour hike (four hours to get there and three hours to get back) has been necessary to reach Boiling Lake.

To ensure that in future day visitors can comfortably reach Boiling Lake, which is by the way located over 800 meters above sea level, the Austrian company Doppelmayr was commissioned by ABL Holdings LTD to develop the record-breaking ropeway. From the bottom station, where shopping and hospitality offerings will also be created, the ropeway will bring guests to the National Park in just under 20 minutes and at a travel speed of six meters per second. For this purpose, a detachable 10-passenger gondola lift – according to the manufacturer the longest continuous-movement monocable ropeway in the world, featuring Doppelmayr’s “D-Line” ropeway generation – will be used as a fast, reliable and environmentally friendly means of transport. Once at the top station, visitors will be able to reach Boiling Lake in only a few minutes’ walk. A restaurant with a panoramic terrace, viewing platforms and a six-meter-high statue of the “Sisserou” national bird will make guests’ stay at the mountain station entertaining. A total of 1,000 passengers per hour and direction can be transported via the ropeway. The opening of the installation is scheduled for 2024. (eap)
